Patrick: Evil Awakens (2013)

Patrick: Evil Awakens (2013)

Actors:
Jackson Gallagher, Sharni Vinson & Charles Dance

Director:
Mark Hartley

Runtime:
1 hr 36 minutes

Plot:
Kathy (Sharni Vinson) is a young nurse that is eager to prove herself in her new job in an isolated psychiatric clinic. She's intrigued by Patrick (Jackson Gallagher), a comatose patient that her boss Dr. Roget (Charles Dance) assures her is incapable of truly responding to any external stimuli. Kathy is horrified by the experiments that Roget and his nurse Matron Cassidy (Rachel Griffiths) inflict upon him, and she's initially pleased when she finds a way to communicate with him. This quickly turns to horror when Patrick uses his psychic abilities to interfere with her life outside of the hospital, as Patrick has grown obsessed with Kathy and will harm anyone that he deems to be interfering with his relationship with her.

Review:

This is a low budget (remake) Australian horror film. The special effects are very well done for a low budget, I've seen some higher budget films with worse to be honest. The cinematography in this film was done by Garry Richards and he did a splendid job. The lead actress Sharni Vinson (You're Next) was great as always. And the rest of the cast was good in general.

The plot itself makes you think twice about comatose people and telekinesis in a whole new light. Basically the movie is about a stalker in a coma with the ability to make your life hell. I would highly recommend this to anyone.

My Bloody Valentine (Original vs Remake)

My Bloody Valentine

Original
Remake
1981
2009
Actors: Paul Kelman, Lori Hallier & Neil Affleck
Actors: Jensen Ankles, Jaime King & Kerr Smith
Director: George Mihalka
Director: Patrick Lussier
Run Time: 1hour 30 minutes
Run Time: 1hour 41 Minutes

Comparison:
Both films are mindless slasher movies with buckets of gore and blood. The storylines are very different while both having a miner serial killer in town. The original is and will continue to be a cult classic and one of the best in the sub genre of slasher horror films. While the remake, well is forgotten by the wayside. Not for it's cast but for the film itself. I would recommend the original but if you want to see the true difference watch the remake.

The Wolf Man (Original vs Remake)

The Wolf man

Original
Remake
1941
2010
Actors: Lon Chaney Jr., Claude Rains & Evelyn Ankers
Actors: Benicio Del Toro, Anthony Hopkins & Emily Blunt
Director: George Waggner
Director: Joe Johnston
Run Time: 1hour 10 minutes
Run Time: 1hour 43 Minutes
Acting: This version has a lot of well known actors and it shows.

Acting: This film has an all-star cast and almost guarantees it's success.
The gradual transformation of human to
wolf man in this film was well done (for the 1940s). Atmosphere, lighting and such were the
major effects for this film and done well.
Lighting, sets, plot, storyline & effects were all on point. This film IMO is one of the best made horror films done in the past 10+ years.

Review:
Both leading men played Lawrence Talbot in different ways but both played the part extremely well and made the part their own. The reboot kept to the original wolf man makeup look which speaks volumes. Both versions are worth seeing and I would recommend seeing both. In this reviewer's eyes there is no clear winner or looser between these two.

Review:
While I was trying to keep these reviews this month on a free basis, I could not help but add a few new rentals this month. So this one you will have to pay to watch, unless you can find it on youtube.

Do not come into this movie thinking its a remake, this is a reboot (two totally different things).  While the plot and consept are the same the character names and situation that the family moves into the house are different. There is no tall freaky man with a funky hat as the main bad spirit. The effects in this version are better than the original and the clown is even creapier. Taken the differences of the movies, watch this one as if it wasn't a remake but a whole new movie and you will love it. The acting is top notch, its got a modern edge that the original didn't have. Don't get me wrong, I like the original but for a new generation this version will more than satisfy.

If you can get past the creepy clown I would highly suggest you rent this movie.
